The festival is structured in two parts: It begins with the Portal Asia (from the 6th to the 8th of June at Casa Asia), with cultural events and the screening of films and documentaries about Spanish cinema made in Asia, and continues with the festival Casa Asia Film Week (from the 9th to the 12th of June), with films that can be seen in the three halls of the Girona Cinema. In addition, the screenings will be within the framework of three different sections: «Official Section» —where recently produced Asian films will compete—, «Panorama» —which brings together a selection of the best Asian productions of the latest years— and finally, «Retrospective» —devoted to a director or a filmography of the history of cinema in that continent.

The cinematography of Hong Kong will have a highlighted role in this first edition, thanks to the collaboration of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels. Two of this year’s best productions from Hong Kong will serve to open and close the contest: The 9th of June, Reign of Assassin by John Woo and Chow-bin Su for the opening, and the 12th of June, The Stool Pigeon by Dante Lam for the closing.

The contest also includes two special sessions not screened in cinemas before: One paying tribute to Japan with the screening of the superproduction Space Battleship Yamato by the film-maker Takashi Yamakazi, lent by the distributor Mediatres Estudio, and another with the preview of the Chinese film Confucio, performed by Chow Yun-Fat.

The Golden Durian Award is reborn with this new festival, and will stand out the best long film of the official section, after the deliberation of an international jury made up of experts in cinema and critics.

Casa Asia Film Week, as a festival specialised in Asian cinema, the only one held in Barcelona, aims to become one of the best contests of this area of the world in Europe and in a meeting point of other festivals that have a clear Asian accent such as Cannes, Venice, San Sebastián, Berlinale, Locarno, Udine Far East Film Festival, Rotterdam, Granada Southern Films, Las Palmas, SEMINCI of Valladolid and the Sitges Film Festival.

This week of Asian cinema is organised by Casa Asia and is made up of the programme by Ángel Sala and Mike Hostench from the Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya, as well as the general coordination by Gloria Fernández and Enrique Garcelán from CineAsia. Menene Gras Balaguer, responsible for the Department of Culture and Exhibitions of Casa Asia, directs the festival.
