The Asian Film Festival Barcelona – AFFBCN, the Asian auteur film festival, reaches its eleventh edition this year and will be held from October 25 to November 5, 2023.

This film festival, specialised in the Asian continent, presents this autumn a representative program of the most recent experimental and independent cinema, with more than a hundred films from twenty countries in Asia and the Pacific, which can be seen at Cinemes Girona, Phenomena, Zumzeig, CaixaForum and Filmoteca de Catalunya headquarters, and also on the FILMIN Platform and Betevé.

The festival distributes its programme into five sections: Official, Official Panorama, Discoveries, NETPAC and Special. Each of them has its jury made up of directors, film critics and writers. The AFFBCN will award fifteen prizes: Best Film, Best Director and Best Script for each of the competing sections.

New Image

In this edition, the AFFBCN presents a new image, the work of the Chinese artist Rong Rong, which closes the series of posters with Pierre Gonnord’s -French photographer-  works.

The AFFBCN 2023 poster evokes a cinematographic sequence that this Chinese artist constructs and then photographs, and that is coherent with the presence of Chinese cinema this year.

Casa Asia’s relationship with Rong Rong goes back a long way since in 2008 in Madrid and Barcelona we organised the exhibition project “The Power of Ruins” made up of 45 images made by the artist.

La cinematografía china, protagonista

This year the Festival dedicates special attention to Chinese cinematography, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain.

In fact, the retrospective will correspond to the Chinese filmmaker Wang Chao, with the screening of a selection of films at Cinemes Girona and at the Filmoteca de Catalunya.

Open Call

For the first time, the Festival has opened a call for directors, producers and film students to present their fiction and documentary feature films, and become part of the programme.

The submission period ends next September 15. The Festival organization reserves the right to screen the selected films.
