The common denominator of this volume is the contemporary Chinese photography, whose role in the transformation of artistic practices in the country has been essential, as demonstrated by Wu Hung and Christoffer Phillips in the project “Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China” (2000) for the Smart Museum of the University of Chicago and the International Photography Center of New York. The book brings together the work of six Chinese contemporary artists (Liu Zheng, Yan Huang, An Hong, Wang Qingsong, Yang Fudong, and Zhang Huan) who are among the most representative of this new photography, which is understood as a key instrument for the creation of new languages on the basis of any support that suits the intentionality of the artist. All of them share an academic background, in which the teaching of painting has predominated and where photography lacked the importance it has subsequently had and still has in China, as an artistic practice paradoxically more pictorial than the painting itself.
