13th Asia Festival: Music and Stage Arts from Asia once again at Mercè Festival

Mercè Festival in Barcelona will count on shows from Asia thanks to Asia Festival once again, which holds its 13th edition. From the 18th to the 24th of September, the Festival will offer a programme for all kind of public, with proposals that reflect diversity and dynamism of the Asian artistic scenario with contemporary and traditional musical proposals and of stage arts.

Asia Festival 2014 presents a total of 11 international performances in 6 days on 8 different stages in Barcelona and with free shows, except for the representation of the theatre of Beijing Opera. With the participation of more than 150 artists, a total of 13 different Asian countries will be represented. Plaça dels Àngels, Plaça Joan Coromines, MACBA Auditorium, l’espai Francesca Bonnemaison, Plaça de la Catedral, l’Ateneu Barcelonès, Sant Pau's Modernist Venue and CaixaFòrum will be the main stages of this date with Asian culture.

Asia Festival is organised by Casa Asia and counts on the support of Barcelona County Council and the collaboration of Barcelona City Council and Melià Hotels International. This edition also includes the collaboration of Japan Foundation, Chinese Cultural Centre, Korean Cultural Centre, Confucius Institute of Barcelona, embassies of Thailand, Uzbekistan and the Philippines and the company You Mobile, among others.

Music and Stage Proposals between the 18th and the 23rd of September

The best Chinese theatre of the Beijing Opera, which will adapt Cervantes' El Quijote, will start off the 13th Asia Festival on Thursday 18th of September at l’espai Francesca Bonnemaison. The Beijing Opera company from Guizhou that will perform the work “Don Quijote, the Wandering Knight”, is made up of 40 musicians and actors from this Chinese province. The work will be represented again on Friday at CaixaFòrum Auditorium.

On Friday 19th of September, within Mercè Música, the Indian band Black Coffee for the first time in Europe, with the versatile percussionist Mayookh Bhowmick will fill Plaça de la Catedral with a mixture of sounds that go from the most traditional music, going through electronic music and hip hop. The Black Coffee are a reference of the new generation of Indian musicians, and will be accompanied by the dance group Barcelona Khatak Project, led by the famous Pakistani dancer Fasih ur Rehman.

On Saturday 20th of September, it will be Barcelona Coral Asia's turn, music band created in 2012, as Casa Asia and Barcelona City Council's initiative, and made up of 50 young people from 23 different nationalities (60% are Asian), is a display of the cultural diversity in the city. The choir will perform outdoors within wonderful Sant Pau's Modernist Venue, where Casa Asia's Headquarters is located.

The Festival, with a rest on Sunday, will retake its activity on Monday 22nd of September with “New Arirang”, a show that will count on the participation of around ten artists of the Korean company Pocheon Folk Art Company that will offer a repertoire of Korean traditional dances, rhythms and songs with a more contemporary version at l’Espai Francesca Bonnemaison.

The musical proposal for Tuesday 23rd of September comes with 2 Japanese musicians, representatives of the most current Jazz, with the show “Jazz in Japan”, at l’Ateneu de Barcelonès. This musician is Masahiko Satoh, pianist and composer with more than 80 albums that prove his extense professional career, and the singer is Akiko Uesugui.

24th of September: «A Day in Asia»: more music shows and activities for all kind of audience

Asia Festival will be closed on Mercè Day with «A Day in Asia», a full day with activities addressed to a varied public concentrated at Plaça dels Àngels, Plaça Joan Coromines and MACBA Auditorium, which was supposed to be a meeting point of Asian culture fans.

This festive day will include reknown musical performances, among which we highlight the concert that will end the 13th edition of Asia Festival, given by the Japanese band Kiwi & The Papaya Mangoes, with a proposal that merges Japanese traditional music with hip hop, reggae and Brazilian music rhythms with an original staging. Before this there will be two performances, the first one is by the Korean company Pocheon Folk Art Company and the second given by the popular Pakistani folk singer Arif Lohar, who is a star in Pakistan. They will all perform on the stage in Plaça dels Àngels.

“A Day in Asia” will also offer a display of traditional dances of the Philippines, Thailand and Uzbekistan; martial arts, such as kalaripayattu (India), ninjutsu (Japan) and muay thai boran (Thailand); demostrations of traditional instruments; games, storytelling and workshops for the youngest, a parade with 40 Chinese drums and even the premiere of the documentary Melting Pot: castellers indis, govindes catalans at Macba Auditorium. The day will end with the tasting of several Asian cuisines.

The poster of the 13th Asia Festival was created by Marc Pallàs, who won the poster contest among 116 other posters and will be the image of this year’s Asia Festival. The jury especially valued its originality, the representation of cultural diversity of the Asian continent, as well as the festive spirit its illustration creates.
