"Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo", the last film by Iciar Bollaín

Casa Asia recommends the last film by Iciar Bollaín, Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo, shot between the capital of Nepal and Mustang where the main character, Laia, turns to a personal project of a school that cares for those who have right to nothing: the children that live in the shacks on the shore of the river that goes through the city of Kathmandu.

Synopsis

Laia, a young Catalan teacher, moves to Kathmandu in the early 90's, to volunteer in a local school. She will soon discover extreme poverty and a devastatingly bleak educational system that leaves out the most needy. She initially protests and later decides to get married out of convenience, so as to legalize her situation and take on an ambitious educational project in the slums of Kathmandu. She immediately realizes that she can't do it all by herself. She also discovers a beautiful gift she had never expected: to fall in love with the stranger she marries. She finds herself torn between her love life and her commitment to the children she helps. Laia and Sharmila, another young teacher who becomes her dearest friend, work side by side to launch a new project that will distance Laia from her partner beyond repair. It will, however, always unite her to Sharmila and small Kushila, in a personal journey into the depths of the Nepalese society and also to her most inner self.

Notes of the Director

My challenge as a director is to take to the screen the magic of giving these "keys" to the children, the beauty of the process of helping them being people because, as the young Nepalese teacher Sharmila says, co-star of the film, they are children that need more than learning to read and write, they are children that "need light".

Icíar Bollaín, Spanish director and actress, born in Madrid on June 12, 1967. In 1992, she was named Best Spanish Actress by Cartelera Turia magazine and in 1993, received the Premio Ojo Critico II Milenio (Critical Eye 2nd Millennium Award) by the National Radio of Spain. She also received the City of Cuenca Award for her achievements in the second "Women Directors" Film Festival. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain. She is the life companion of Scottish screenwriter, Paul Laverty, writer of Ken Loach's films.
