With the end of the school year, we share the closing activities of the AFEX-Aprendemos. Familias en Red programs, which this year have taken place in five schools in Catalonia.
This program helps improve the relationship between migrant families and their children's schools through language learning and understanding of the Catalan education system. It also helps families to more closely monitor their children's academic progress and encourages them to successfully complete compulsory secondary education (ESO) and continue their post-compulsory studies, expanding their knowledge and future employment prospects.
At the same time, their children, as well as other teenagers at the centers where the program is implemented, take on a new role and become teachers for the adults in their families and neighborhoods. They teach using their native languages and gain knowledge and experience in volunteering and language teaching methodology.
The mothers, who make up the majority of the adult students, gain autonomy, meet other women with the same needs and create networks, while exchanging knowledge and learning about local festivals.
This year, the AFEX program has been developed in five educational centers in Catalonia and, as a closing activity, the Fondo schools visited the CIBA, the resource space for women in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
