The Bamboo School, the intercultural and inclusive education project of Casa Asia celebrates 20 years of life. This project was born during the 2003-2004 school year with the aim of introducing the Asian continent and the Pacific region to the school population.
For 20 years, the Bamboo School has been bringing Asian and Pacific cultures and societies closer to students in early childhood, special, non-formal, primary and secondary education, and in adult training centers, through a varied offer of workshops and activities from a dozen Asian countries. It has also carried out various community education programs such as “AFEX-We learn families online", which received the 2018 Francesc Candel Prize, "Poems that bring us closer", O "Accounts to read, stories to create“, and youth programs such as “Asia BCN Routes","Intercultural Forum Theater"Or the"Orient School".
FOR Imma Llort, the coordinator of the Bamboo School, “from the beginning I wanted it to be a project that would make students aware of the values of Asian cultures and societies and open perspectives. Knowing other cultures and experiencing cultural diversity as an opportunity to exchange knowledge and learning makes us a richer and more cohesive society.”
The coordinator of the Bambú School also values the innovative nature that the project has had, especially for the dynamic and participatory learning methodology, for the inclusive content, because most of the activities are energized by Catalan people from an Asian cultural context, and for how the project has evolved with community education proposals in format APS (community service) to respond to the changing needs of educational centers, Asian groups and society in general. Llort also highlights the high percentage of participation of people from an Asian cultural background in all activities.
Figures to highlight and good reception of the project
The figures support the good reception of this project. In all these years More than 244.000 students have participated, a total of 2.230 educational centers throughout Catalonia has welcomed its programs, and the number of classroom activities aimed at different age groups: from kindergarten, primary, secondary and adult training centers, It has been 6.300. On the other hand, the 73% of the participants in the activities and programs and the 98% of educators and facilitators of the Bamboo School are from an Asian cultural context.
In addition to classroom activities (courses and workshops on Asian content), the Bamboo School has carried out the following Community Education programs, in APS format:
- AFEX-We learn. Families in Network in which 30 educational centers have participated, mainly secondary schools, with 150 volunteer adolescent students, teaching 725 adults, mainly from their families.
He received the Francesc Candel Prize (2018) awarded by the Fundació Carulla in recognition of the work of migrant integration carried out at AFEX through language learning, with the specificity that it is the children themselves who teach Catalan. , Spanish and/or basic computer science to parents and in pairs or groups, in the classroom of the schools or institutes where they study and with the support of a university facilitator who has experienced immigration firsthand. It is a teaching and inclusive, multilingual, intercultural, multilevel and intergenerational learning.
- Poems that bring us closer: exchange of poems between educational centers and merchants from various neighborhoods of Barcelona with the participation of 25 educational centers, with 832 students, 60 teachers and 125 merchants.
- Stories to read, stories to create, which brings the knowledge of story reading to the region, working on the reading habit and the creation of new stories that are presented to different audiences in traditional Asian formats, with the participation of 20 educational centers, 2.100 students and 80 teachers.
And the youth programs:
- Intercultural Forum Theatre, project to share experiences and debate stereotypes and rumors about cultural diversity and coexistence through theater. 18 editions of the course with the participation of 600 young people from 20 different countries, mainly Asian and 6 facilitators.
- Asia routes in BCN, intercultural project that contributes to the knowledge of diverse Barcelona and to break stereotypes and rumors about immigration. 120 routes related to 4 Asian countries have been carried out, guided by 8 different educators and with the participation of 2.300 young people and adults.
- Orient School, days of study and intercultural debate between young Asians and Europeans in the Balearic Islands. 2004-2011 (7 editions), with the participation of 175 young university students from 17 countries in Asia and Europe.
The Bamboo School will celebrate its 20th anniversary on April 29 in an institutional event in which Javier Parrondo, general director of Casa Asia, Sara Belbeida, commissioner of Citizen Relations and Cultural and Religious Diversity, Barcelona City Council, Oriol Amorós, general secretary of Social Rights of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Júlia Llompart, professor at the Faculty of Education of the UAB and Imma Llort, coordinator of the Bamboo School.
This act aims to take stock of the work carried out and recognize all the people who have made it possible: educators and facilitators, as well as representatives of collaborating institutions and entities, schools and participants of all the programs and activities that have been carried out. cape.
