Encounter with Sayaka Murata: "Japanese Current Women and Literature"

Owing to the publication of her book in Spanish, La dependienta (Ediciones Duomo 2019) and in Catalan, La noia de la botiga 24 hores (Editorial Empúries 2018), this encounter on current women and Japanese literaturese with Sayaka Murata and Albert Nolla, translator of Japanese into Catalan of La noia de la botiga 24 hores, and Barcelona City Award of Translation in Catalan Language 2005 for the novel Tòquio Blues, by Haruki Murakami.

With a hilarious vision of society's expectations towards single women, the writer Sayaka Murata has become the new voice of Japanese literature. Her tenth novel, La dependienta, won in 2016 the well-known Japanese literature award Akutagawa, in 2018 she was selected among the 9 best books of New Yorker's Best Books, and appointed Book of the Year in the category of fiction by Foyles in the United Kingdom.

La dependienta has been defined by Grove Atlantic as «A fond and fresh portray that reminds of Banana Yoshimoto, Han Kang and Amélie.»

The encounter will be developed in Japanese, Spanish and Catalan with consecutive translation.

Sayaka Murata (Japan, 1979), Japanese writer who has won the Gunzo Award for New Writers, Mishima Yukio Award, the Noma Literary New Face Award and Akutagawa Award. Murata explores the different consequences of non-conformity regarding gender roles, parenting and sex. Many of the topics and the stories in her writing come from daily observations as a part-time worker in a convenience shop. Social acceptation of the lack of sex in several forms, asexuality included, involuntary celibacy and voluntary celibacy, especially withint marriage, is repeated as a topic in several of her works. In 2016 she was appointed one of the Women of the Year of Vogue Japan.

Albert Nolla, translator and associate professor of the Translation and Interpretation Deparment of Univerisity Autonomous of Barcelona, where he teaches Japanese Culture and Literature. For more than 10 years he has been devoted to literary translation, field where he has translated Japanese authors such as Haruki Murakami, Kenzaburo Oé, Junichiro Tanizaki, Yasunari Kawabata or Banana Yoshimoto. Likewise, he has translated authors in English language such as Paul Auster, Khaled Hosseini or V. S. Naipaul, among others, into Catalan. He teaches courses of Japanese literature in Casa Asia, such as “Japanese Female Literature: from Higuchi Ichiyo to Yoshimoto Banana"
