Course: "From Sôseki to Murakami. Panorama of Modern Japanese Literature"

Curso:

At this course a tour around the great movements and authors that have influenced Japanese arts will be carried out, from Meiji period until today. Students will acquire general knowledge of modern Japanese literature, with special emphasis on life and work of highlighted authors.

The order of sessions is the following:

Sessions are organised around a theoretical presentation by the teacher, followed by a comment of some texts/videos related to the period or to analysed authors.

1. Meiji literature

2. Parents of modern novels: Soseki and Ôgai

3. The first modernists: Akutagawa, Tanizaki Kawabata

4. Literature and war

5. Great post-war authors: Mishima and Ôe

6. Contemporary literature: Murakami & co

 

Students will have, depending on availability, the service of the classroom library with bibliographic material complementary to the course.

Course given by Albert Nolla, translator and associate professor of the Department of Translation and Interpretation of University Autonomous of Barcelona, where he teaches Japanese language, culture and literature. For more than 10 years he has been devoted to literary translation, field where he has translated authors such as Haruki Murakami, Kenzaburo Oé, Junichiro Tanizaki, Yasunari Kawabata or Banana Yoshimoto. Moreover, he has translated English language authors into Catalan, such as Paul Auster, Khaled Hosseini or V. S. Naipaul, among others.
