Lecture "Environment in India: Alternatives for Sustainability"


Current economic development is affecting ecological sustainability and there are more and more voices that call out for alternative development models. Teacher Ashish Kothari will approach different initiatives that can offer a sustainable and equitable future.

The presentation will be focused on one of these projects, ecological radical democracy or "eco-swaraj" in India that rises up from the initiatives that search for satisfaction of basic needs and the introduction of alternatives ways of government, production, distribution and consumption, which have appeared in many parts of the world, such as the "sumac kawsay" in Latin America, or "ubuntu", movements in South Africa, Europe or United States.

Delivered by:
Ashish Kothari, funding member of the environmental group of India Kalpavriksh (, graduated at the Indian Institute of Public Administration of New Delhi, and guest teacher at several universities including the well-known University of Bowdoin, USA. Coordinator of strategies and national actiona plans regarding biological diversity, he served at the Greenpeace International of India, was part of the Indian Society of Ecological Economy, the world commission in protected areas, where he was in charge of the social section, economic and environmental policy, of the Historical Natural Society of Bombay. He helped to establish manager corporate, equitable, community and sustainable strategies of IUCN and of the consortium ICCA. ( Funding member of the Global Sustainability University. (
