Australian Film Series

Ciclo de Cine Asutraliano IMG 2

Casa Asia and the Embassy of Australia present a selection of Australian films with the purpose to recover some titles that have become part of history, such as Lantana (2001), film that opens the series and despite being still very current, it represents a way of understanding and making films.
Next Screening, 14th of February: "500 Miles"

The display includes 6 films that have been produced between 2011 and 2014, except for Lantana. This approach to Australian cinema aims to bring a cinematographic industry in constant expansion closer to the public. Unfortunately it is less present than we would like it to be in commercial distribution.

Casa Asia has wanted to devote a space to Australian cinema for a while. Despite it has features that are clearly western, it has two distinctive elements that make it unique: the fact it is produced on the other side of the world and in a geographic area that is in Southeast Asia. This location turns Australia into a strategic area of maximum interest for the afluence of the different migrations from the surroundings and this, unavoidably, is reflected on films produced throughout these years in the country. The geographic turn taken place in Humanities in the last decade, reestablishes the notion of spatiality in all audiovisual narratives, which proves the importance, in this case, of where this cinema is produced.

Lantana and Red Dog, Tracks, Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla, These Final Hours and 500 Miles show the importance of the relationship between spatiality and temporality, highlighting the predominance of a cultural geography that is insperable from human geography and its representation though cinema.
