Presentation of the Film "Batad: Sa Paang Palay" (‘Before the Harvest’)

Presentación de la película

Casa Asia and the Embassy of the Philippines in Spain, in collaboration with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, present the film Batad (2006) by Vic Acedillo and Benjie García, representative of the latest cinema made in the Philippines in the course of the first decade of the 21st century.

In this course there is a long tradition of independent and experimental cinema of the 70s until nowadays. In film makers such as the well-known Lino Brocka or Mike de León we can find the origins of this tradition. Their regard, as well as those of other contemporary film-makers aim at the reality of their country, everyday life and existential dynamics that characterise its diversity. Soon Casa Asia will present an extense series of Philippine cinema with around 20 films, through which we would like to offer a plural regard of a country that changes and that can be known through the contribution of cinema.

Batad (90') is a film with several registers, even if the intention to focus on the life and existence of a 14-year old kid that leaves school and starts working as a seller at the market of Banawe in order to help his family predominates. The destination of the main character will change when he gets a pair of rubber trainers and starts doing whatever until he becomes a tourist guide. In one of his guides, in order to get the his desired trainers, he ends up leaving his town of origin, lfugao, and he goes to the big city to make his dreams come true.
