Lecture: "Kyrgyzstan 2010"

Within the framework of activities of the Observatory of Central Asia, Casa Asia organises the lecture "Kyrgyzstan 2010". The purpose is to make Kyrgyzstan known and the nature of the conflict that is currently destabilizing not only the country, but all the Central Asian region.

Until not long ago, Kyrgyzstan was seen as a reference to be followed for the development od democracy in former Soviet countries of Central Asia. However, the growing corruption of the government of Kurmanbek Bakiyev and the degradation of the rights and freedoms of the citizens have ended up in a strong instability of the government system of the country.

After the aparently sponteneous riots of April 2010, a provisional government led by the leader of the oposition, Roza Otunbayeva, took power: He promised legislative elections and changes in the Constitution to reinforce the control of the Parliament to the detriment of the figure of the President.

Kyrgyzstan is living one of the most critical episodes since its independence. The lecture will include the presence of two experts in Kyrgyzstan that will give us a general presentation of the country and will give us their opinion of the present and the future of the Central Asian country.
