After completion of the course, students are expected to understand how the innovation ecosystem works in China and gain some insights in particular technology domains of high interest. In particular, it is expected that students understand the specificities of the technology and innovation ecosystems in China, their strengths and gaps, and which are their prospects.

This subject is derived from the key role of China in the evolution of technology, and from the observation that still the knowledge about the real performance and future perspectives of technology ecosystems in China is still limited.

The course has both a theoretical and a practical approach. On the theoretical side, a framework suited to the particularities of China’s innovation and technology ecosystem will be presented. This is based on direct experience and studies of the course directors. On the practical side, guest lecturers will introduce the status and developments of key technological ecosystems in China. Some additional events, not strictly part of the course, but where students are particularly welcome will complete the landscape of innovation in China.

In addition, students will be provided with some methods originated in the entrepreneurial arena in the last decade so they can examine a practical case of a China startup on their own. The course consists of several parts: an introduction to innovation and technology ecosystems in China, entrepreneurial methodologies to analyse startups and lectures on specific technology ecosystems of main interest.

OBJECTIVES AND REQUIREMENTS

This is a theoretical and practical under/graduate level course on the status and prospects of technology ecosystems in China with some tools and methodologies for managers and innovators to analyse them based on new developments in entrepreneurship.

There are some major objectives of this course: (i) to provide students with some conceptual frameworks for ecosystems to improve their management skills on technology innovation; (ii) to provide updated and insiders’ knowledge on the status and prospects of technology innovation ecosystem in China; (iii) to provide students with some methodologies to analyse startups and innovative projects in China; and (iv) to connect students with knowledgeable individuals on technology innovation in China.

Classes will be held online. Students are requested to actively interact and participate during the lessons, and read the references eventually assigned to each session.

The students are required to complete an investigation of their own from the cases proposed during the course. This will lead to a certificate of achievement (certificado de aprovechamiento). For those, attending at least 80% of the lectures, there will be a certificate of attendance (certificado de asistencia).

All course materials will be available online upon the start of the course / appropriate sessions.
