This course focuses on the connection between Korean historical dramas, known as sageuk, and the interpretation of Korean history, analyzing how these productions show the concept of “Han”, a deep and collective emotion rooted in the mentality of this country. and how it manifests itself in the plots, characters and tone of these series.

Program:

1st session: The Korean concept of “han”

Definition and presence in various fields from literature to cinema.

In this session, we will talk about this concept and its presence in society, and how it is incorporated and communicated through various cultural productions.

2nd session: “My dearest”. A portrait of women's survival in the Joseon era

My dearest (연인) is a 2023 series whose plot is set in the Joseon era during the Qing invasion. A drama full of success and awards that shows the reality of war. In this session we will address the time, the context and the situation of women, with the notions of chastity and virtue.

3rd session: From “Mr Sunshine” to “The Monster of Old Seoul”. The last years of the hermit kingdom and the Japanese occupation

In this session we will talk about several series that narratively span from the last years of the Joseon dynasty until 1945, when the Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula ended. We will highlight the cultural and social elements present in these productions articulated around the concept of Han and the Independence Movement.

4th session: “Youth of May”. South Korean dictatorship and “Gwanju Uprising”

May youth (오월의 청춘) is a 2021 production whose plot is set in the city of Gwanju during 1980. In the last session we will discuss the era through various fictions and the work Human Acts by Han Kang.

Teacher:

Natalia Sánchez Diana She is a publicist, editorial editor and author of more than a dozen novels. She is currently studying a Higher Degree in International Trade specializing in Asia. She shares her interest and passion for South Korean cinema and series through her social networks.
